Did Ortiz take steroids?

What an interesting article to come out. David Ortiz is not sure if he has taken steroids or not.

Ortiz told the Boston Herald that he could not say definitively if he had ever used performance-enhancing drugs in the past. The burly designated hitter also said that if he did, it happened when he was much younger.
“I tell you, I don’t know too much about steroids, but I started listening about steroids when they started to bring that (expletive) up,” Ortiz told the paper. “I started realizing and getting to know a little bit about it. You’ve got to be careful.
“I used to buy a protein shake in my country. I don’t do that anymore because they don’t have the approval for that here, so I know that, so I’m off buying things at the GNC back in the Dominican (Republic). But it can happen anytime, it can happen. I don’t know. I don’t know if I drank something in my youth, not knowing it.”

He did end up joking about steroids later in the article, joking that he should take them and see what happens.

Where was his publicist on that one?

    I think it’s a legitimate story.
A lot of players didn’t or don’t know about the contents of what they’re consuming. These days, there’s no excuse for that, because it’s become a widely discussed hot button issue, and I think his statement reflects that.
If you aren’t asking your trainer what’s in this, what banned substance might be in whatever it is, then you’re negligent at this point. Six years ago, I think you could legitimately claim the opposite.

I love Ortiz, but… he has a gut. A serious gut. And he’s a huge guy, so it’s not like he has a disproportionately gigantic head like Bonds and Sosa.
He could’ve, but yeah, that gut means i’m not worried.

  4. Craig says:

I’m not worried at all, but this story will have some legs in the near term. David Ortiz . . . steroids – few things are sexier than that in sports from the media’s warped perspective.

it sounds like someone’s setting up an alibi nice and far in the future…

lol, I’m surprised it took so long. That’s why I read independent baseball sites. I don’t know. If Ortiz was ever helped by steroids while he was with the Red Sox I would be very upset and hold him to the same standards I hold McGwire, Sosa, Bonds, Sheffield and Giambi to. He certainly doesn’t look like someone on steroids though. As he’s said in the past….
He doesn’t take steroids, all he needs is rice and beans.

And he has said that he has been tested every single year. Doubt he was lying about that, too easy for the testers to disprove……

This is Papi at his best, and I mean it. There are disproportianate number of Latin players in the minors who get pegged for P.E. violations. As one of the best Latin American players in the game, he steps up, tells how it could happen and draws attention to the system more than to himself.
Honestly, when I read Wily quoted in the globe after his salami, I wished we had Pedro back. Wily spoke in demonstrative but broken english. Pedro would have shut the microphones down, kicked some irish ass, and conducted the interview himself in Spanish. Someone needs to step in and make sure the media acknowledges there are some pretty serious cultural differences among players in the majors, and there is enormous incentive for pro clubs to exploit the ones that land in their favor. Academies in the Americas? Here, take this…
Enhancers or not, Ortiz is amazing. Stop talking about his head and see him as a human with amazing talent and intelligence.

I never thought of him using steroids.
